My Review: 

I've been a fan of Beth Revis for a while, though the last book I picked up for hers was kind of a bust for me. I was excited to pick this one up from First to Read, though. I've never read any kind of book about alchemy (that I know of), so I was looking forward to delving into a new topic for me. 

I loved Nedra pretty much immediately. She loves her family and even wishes to sacrifice her education for them, but they won't have it. Nedra is whisked off to the big city for her training. Her goal is the help find the cure for the sickness that is plaguing her land and her people. 

School isn't easy for her. She's a good student and as the head professor takes her under his wing for special training, the others start to talk. Only Grey is on her side. As Nedra gets deeper into her studies she also falls deeper into the temptation to use the darkest part of alchemy.

I love the strength of Nedra throughout the entire book. She shows little weakness when it comes to Grey or her family, and keeps her focus on finding the cure for the sickness. This book is definitely twisty. You don't always know who to trust or who is on the right side...or which side is the right one! 

Grey is kind of swoony, but is absolutely the weaker of the two characters, though he doesn't really seem to mind standing in Nedra's shadow. He wants to help her, to love her, but it's hard for him sometimes. Nedra is very complex and Grey isn't always sure how to help her. 

I'm definitely looking forward to the rest of this series and what else Beth has in store for us.
