This is the second book in the Pretty Smart Girls series, but it could have easily been a stand alone book. Fearless focuses mostly on Devi and Ben and their rocky relationship. Ben is clearly head over heels for Devi, but she's got so much drama in her life that she can't be bothered by him.
The story starts out well enough. Devi and Ben head back to New York to continue life after the competition that Ben and his friends one. Devi is struggling financial because her addict brother stole the money she saved before she left home.
Devi's worries about money get annoying quick. She doesn't like handouts, but doesn't understand that her friends just want to help her. This is how she ends up in the right for an amateur fight, which she wins.
The main characters spend a lot of time getting drunk and discussing their relationship, which gets a little boring. Devi can't help but point out how different they are every time. Ben is a nice guy, but he takes a lot of crap from Devi and it gets old.
Throw in a pregnant fling of Ben's and things just kind of go downhill. It's sad, because when they're together they aren't half bad.
When an emergency calls Devi home Ben is the first person to call. He meets her family and she, in turn, meets his. Needless to say, Ben's mom is a total wench when it comes to meeting Devi. His sister's are cool, but I get that his mom could probably rule hell in my first impression of her.
This only drives them apart even more. During the trip they eventually start to see eye to eye, but it takes a lot for them to get there.
I really had to push myself to finish this book. I didn't enjoy it as much as I did Jett and Ryan's story, but I was interested to see how it would turn out. There are also very few references, let alone scenes of the cage fighting that was promised in the summary. That was a little disappointing.
The ending was touching and it was nice to see Devi finally get her act together.
