(Review) Everything, Everything

Everything, Everything by Nicola Yoon
Publication Date: September 1, 2015
Pages: 307
Genre: Young Adult
My Goodreads Rating: Four Stars

Goodreads Synopsis:
My disease is as rare as it is famous. Basically, I’m allergic to the world. I don’t leave my house, have not left my house in seventeen years. The only people I ever see are my mom and my nurse, Carla.
But then one day, a moving truck arrives next door. I look out my window, and I see him. He’s tall, lean and wearing all black—black T-shirt, black jeans, black sneakers, and a black knit cap that covers his hair completely. He catches me looking and stares at me. I stare right back. His name is Olly.
Maybe we can’t predict the future, but we can predict some things. For example, I am certainly going to fall in love with Olly. It’s almost certainly going to be a disaster.

My Review:
I'll start out simple. I loved this book. I loved the whole idea of it. I loved everything, everything about it, if you will.

Madeline is a girl who has spent her entire life in her house. She's never been outside, never been to school, never had real friends, etc. This is a sad life, but Madeline doesn't really know any different and really takes it all in stride. I loved her voice from the beginning. She's smart and funny, loved to read and learn (who doesn't), and genuinely doesn't seem to mind that this is the life she's been given. (Did I mention that she's part African American and Asian? Diversity!)

Of course, then Olly moves in. I think that Olly is the first thing that makes Madeline curious about the outside world and while it scares her a little, it's also something that she embraces. Their relationship starts out slow and sweet: just friends, right? I loved Carla's character and how she helped them keep everything secret, even though you knew it wouldn't turn out well. Which it didn't because Olly has troubles of his oww. When Madeline puts herself in the middle of them (and endangers her health) her mom loses it.

Madeline's mom's reaction only causes her to act out in a huge way. Honestly, it's a way that Madeline's mom deserves. (You'll get what I mean if you read the book.) The moments between Madeline and Olly are cute and sweet, not completely swoony, but you can tell that they care about each other.

The adventure they have is precious and when it's over you feel Madeline's loss and sadness. Olly's life is hard, too. One of my favorite things about this book is how they seemed to make each other brave and help to do things they always wanted to do. Whether it was to go outside or to stand up for themselves.

I hadn't really expected the twist at the end, but I think part of me was always hoping. It's a good one, though. I promise.

You should definitely add this one to your reading list!
